Ask the Vet: Frankie and Coping with Blind Pets

Posted on January 14, 2013 by pismobeachvet

Dr. Joel Conn’s segment, Ask The Vet, aired Monday at 6:30am on KCOY CBS 12.  Dr. Conn brought on Frankie the dachshund as his special guest!

Some of you might remember the story of Frankie:  he was brought in for euthanasia due in part to his blindness in 2010 and Drs. Joel and Sarah decided to allow the owner’s to surrender him for re-homing.

Frankie came on “Ask The Vet” nearly three years ago and we realized that we never provided any followup.  About 3 months after his surrender, Drs. Joel and Sarah found Frankie a loving “forever” home with an amazing local family. He is thriving in his new home and his blindness has never slowed him down!

On the segment today, Dr. Conn discussed a few things that can help owners to better care for their blind companions.  See the video below:

Pet of the Week: Indie

Posted on January 7, 2013 by pismobeachvet

Meet Indie, our Pismo Beach Veterinary Clinic Pet of the Week.
Indie is pet of the week for several reasons. First of all, she is an unusual breed, an Alaskan Klee Kai, so I thought you’d want to see her. This is basically a toy breed of a Husky, bred to be of house pet size but with the great coat, intelligence and energy of a husky. Indie is a petite 18 pounds.

Indie is also pet of the week because I wanted to share her story. Indie is diabetic and has another endocrine disorder called Cushings disease. Both of these diseases are serious and can greatly affect a pet’s quality of life if untreated. In addition, both disorders can lead to secondary problems such as bladder infections and blindness. However, because of her mom’s superb and diligent care (and maybe with a tiny bit of help from her doctors, nurses, and modern medicine), Indie is able to enjoy a good quality of life. Here are a couple pictures of her frolicking outside.

Dental Months at Pismo Beach Vet

Posted on December 28, 2012 by pismobeachvet

February is National Pet Dental Month, and because we want your loved ones to start the new year with fresh breath, January and February will be Dental Months at Pismo Beach Vet.

At Pismo Beach Vet, we strongly believe that preventative dental care is the best way to ensure that your pet has a healthy smile for life. It has been shown that 85% of dogs and cats have periodontal disease by the age of three. Good oral hygiene, starting with regular dental cleanings, can improve comfort as well as overall physical health.  Untreated dental disease can lead to major problems affecting the heart, lungs, kidneys, and liver.

For the months of January and February all dental packages will be discounted 15%. These packages include not only the dental cleaning and anesthesia, but also pre-anesthetic blood screening, IV catheterization and fluids to help make these procedures as safe as possible for your pet. Mention this email and also receive a discount on dental products including tooth brush kits.

Call us today for more information or login to your Pet Portal to make an appointment!

Zuzu

Posted on December 23, 2012 by pismobeachvet

Meet Zuzu, our Pismo Beach Veterinary Clinic Pet of the Week.

Zuzu is a 5 year old, female, gray kitty. Zuzu came in to see DNew Imager. Noppinger for a hacking cough. Radiographs taken of her chest were quite shocking.   Zuzu had fluid filling the right side of her chest, compressing her left lung lobes (see the first xray below where one side of the chest has a lot more white than the other side). Carefully tapping her chest with a needle, we were able to remove about a cup of white, milky fluid known as chyle.

This is a condition most commonly seen in young cats that sometimes results from previous trauma to the chest among other causes (Zuzu had been picked up and shaken by the family dog a couple months prior that appeared to have been a minor incident at the time).

Because the fluid kept recurring every couple of weeks in Zuzu, she ultimately made a trek to the University of California Davis veterinary hospital for surgery. She underwent a thoracotomy (open chest surgery) to tie off the potentially leaky duct (see the second xray below where the white fluid is gone but there are bright white staple-looking things inside it – these are the surgical wires used to tie the ducts).

Zuzu recovered well from surgery and went home after 2 days in the hospital. Six weeks later, she has not had any signs of fluid build up and is doing great.

We’re now offering Care Credit at PBVC!

Posted on December 5, 2012 by pismobeachvet

Effective this week, Pismo Beach Vet will be offering Care Credit to our clients.  We know that times are tough for a lot of folks but that doesn’t mean your pet’s health needs to suffer.

Care Credit is a credit card specifically for health needs.  It can be used for Lasik, Cosmetic, Dental, Veterinary, and other Medical Specialties for both you and your pets!

The great thing about Care Credit is that during the promotional period of 6, 12, or 18 months it is 100% interest free!  That means that as long as you make regular payments within the promotional period, there are no charges whatsoever to the card holder.*

It is extremely easy to apply (takes only a few minutes), and in general it is easier to qualify than a normal credit card.  If your credit is not great, you can even use a co-signer to improve your chance of success.

Like most small businesses, we are unfortunately unable to personally extend credit. That’s why we are excited to offer this great new service and hope that it will be of great benefit to our clients. Please let us know if you have any questions. For more information, go to:  http://www.carecredit.com/
