Pet of the Week: Charlie

Posted on November 18, 2011 by pismobeachvet

Meet Charlie, our Pismo Beach Veterinary Clinic Pet of the Week. Charlie is an indoor/outdoor kitty who one day came wandering in from outside with what looked like fishing line embedded in his tail. On initial exam, the long strand of apparent fishing line dove deep down into his tail, but no hook was evident. We anesthetized him to clean him up and get a closer look. The first odd thing we noticed was that Charlie had several bite wounds on his body (including his head and front leg). Once anesthetized, it was apparent that the end of the “fishing line” did not lead to a hook, but was actually a long, dried out tendon (we think)  from his tail! We couldn’t pull out the hook, because it was connected to his body!

The best our forensics abilities could determine, was that he got in a cat fight, got bit a few times on the front end, and then got clawed on the tail during the scuffle. The claw from the other cat must have just hooked into his tail in a way that perfectly and cleanly snagged the tendon, stretched it and ripped it out, leaving a long laceration in the top of the tail and about a foot long “fishing line” dangling from it!

We have never seen this happen before so we were all surprised by the finding. Although this posting is late, it was perfect timing for a strange event as it happened Halloween weekend.

We’ve already seen Charlie back for his recheck to remove the sutures from his surgery. He’s recovering just fine and his tail looks great (still wags and all). If you’re not too grossed out yet, here are some photos:

He’s not too happy with the collar.
You can see the remaining ligament on the left side of the photo. Unfortunately, the longer piece that had looked like fishing line was dried out and had broken off before we got a photo.

Pismo Beach Vet is Turning Green…

Posted on November 6, 2011 by pismobeachvet

Just in time for the holidays, Pismo Beach Vet will be ordering custom reusable bags from ChicoBag.  With plastic and paper grocery bags becoming more and more of a hotly discussed environmental issue, we want to do our part by offering our clients reusable bags.

If you are like me, the biggest thing I hate about reusable bags is keeping them handy!  The nice thing about these little guys is that they fit in your car door pocket (or purse) and easily clip together.  Check them out online:  http://www.chicobag.com/

Plastic bags are a growing hazard to our global ecosystem, making up a large percentage of the bulk of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch.  This 270,000 square mile convergence of floating garbage in the middle of the pacific ocean is just one great reason to start thinking green.

Last Chance to Donate: Coats for Kids

Posted on November 2, 2011 by pismobeachvet

Some of you may have noticed the large brown box in our lobby.  We are one of the businesses working with the San Luis Obispo Rotaract Club in their Coats for Kids campaign.

They will be picking up the box on Friday morning, so this is your last chance to donate.  They are accepting all coats:   kids, adults, male or female.  The organization will be dry cleaning all the items so any condition is fine. For more information, go to:  http://slorotaract.wordpress.com/coats-for-kids/

Thanks for helping us out with this really great cause!

Pismo Beach Vet Remodel Phase 2…

Posted on November 1, 2011 by pismobeachvet

Well, we are officially starting phase two of our remodel!  After months of planning and anxiously awaiting our permit from the City of Pismo Beach, we have started construction.

This phase will involve a total makeover of our reception area/lobby, client restroom, and exam rooms.   The project is anticipated to take around three months and we hope that you will excuse our mess during construction.  We plan on staying open the entire time but may have to somewhat limit our appointment schedule based on exam room availability – we truly appreciate your understanding.  Our goal is to be able to offer you even more services and appointment slots once we have more exam room space.

Special thanks to RRM Design and Tony Van Coops Construction for all of their hard work and late nights to come!

Pet Costume Contest and Haunted Clinic Recap

Posted on October 30, 2011 by pismobeachvet

The Pismo Beach Veterinary Clinic Bi-Annual Haunted Clinic was a scary good time. We had 26 actors, about 150 participants, lots of screams, and a few folks that had to turn back (usually a good sign!).

Thanks to your generous contributions, we raised nearly $400 for the H.E.L.P. fund. We can’t wait to do it again in 2 years!

The Third Annual Pet Costume Contest was also a lot of fun.  We had some amazing entries this year and the decision was truly a tough one for our judges.  Thanks to everyone who came out and made it a really great event!
