Meet Jordan, Our Newest Extern!

Posted on July 31, 2014 by pismobeachvet

We are excited to welcome Ms. Jordan DeVault to Pismo Beach Veterinary Clinic. She is a now a 4th year veterinary student completing her final year at Colorado State University and will graduate from Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine. As part of her final clinical year of veterinary school, Ms. DeVault will be spending some time with us in August. As part of her training, she will be assisting our veterinarians and helping with the clinical management of our patients. We hope that you will welcome her to the Central Coast!

Jordan’s Bio:

“Growing up in Southern California, I have always had an assortment of pets from dogs and cats to raccoons, snakes and horses. Although I am currently completing my clinical year at Colorado State University, I will graduate from Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine (located in the Caribbean) in January of 2015. I have spent the last two years on the Island of St. Kitts and Nevis studying and enjoying the Island life! My special interests in veterinary medicine include surgery, ophthalmology, acupuncture/holistic medicine, and emergency medicine. As a general tracker, I enjoy learning about both small and large animals.  In my spare time I love to go to the beach, travel, play soccer, hang out with my pets, spend time with my family, listen to music and eat food.  After I graduate I will go back to Southern California and will likely work as a small animal practitioner. I need my California beaches!”

It is a very safe and effective product for dogs that swim a lot or for folks who prefer not to use a topical product.

Here’s the best part:  it tastes great!

The Repercussions of Dental Disease

Posted on May 25, 2014 by pismobeachvet

We rarely see such a dramatic case that highlights the importance of preventive dental care. This little toy breed dog came in a few months ago with some of the worst dental decay we have ever seen. Due to the delicate nature of the jaw bone in small dogs, it doesn’t take much bone loss from dental disease to lead to jaw fracture. The fine white lines (black and green arrows) on these pictures are all that is left of this guy’s jaw, less than a millimeter in some places. The red arrow is where the jaw broke. Unfortunately this did not have a happy ending and what makes it especially sad is that it could have been prevented.

Jaw Fracture
Broken jaw and bone loss on the mandible.
Bone Loss
Canines and incisors. Note the complete absence of bone around the incisor teeth.

Is Your Cat Stressed? We can help!

Posted on March 17, 2014 by pismobeachvet

We are now offering FREE Feliway Wipes to all of our feline patients prior to their visit in an effort to help them cope with the stress of coming to see us.  To your cat, the process of entering an unfamiliar carrier, a scary car ride, a strange waiting room and then examination can be very stressful. This can result in a negative experience for both you and your furry companion!

To get your FREE Feliway Wipe, please swing by the clinic to pick it up or ask us to mail one to you prior to your visit!Feliway

What is Feliway?
Feliway is a synthetic copy of the feline facial pheromone, used by cats to mark their territory as safe and secure. By mimicking the cat’s natural facial pheromones, Feliway creates a state of familiarity and security in the cat’s local environment.  As a result, Feliway can be used to help comfort and reassure cats while they cope with a challenging situation and help prevent or reduce the stress caused by a change in their environment. Feliway comes in a whole room diffuser, a spray, and wipes.

30 minutes prior to your scheduled visit, rub one wipe thoroughly inside your cat’s carrier or directly on their bedding. Re-apply Feliway before each trip.

For more info, go to www.feliway.us

More about Cat Stress…

Unlike people, and even dogs, cats tend not to outwardly show their stress.  As a prey species, they have developed techniques to hide weakness and this is why even serious illness can be difficult to diagnose.  We know from numerous behavioral studies that the simple acts of keeping a cat indoors or by adding another cat, we are increasing their baseline level of stress in a significant way.  Cats are like people in that respect:  we may really like spending time in our homes and enjoy the company of friends or family, but with too much of either we can begin to feel cooped up and get stressed!  If we add to that other environmental changes like new construction, visitors, loud noises, or even the presence of a new cat in the neighborhood, we can sometimes lead our feline friends to intolerable levels of stress. Cats like to be in control (no surprise) and will methodically and thoroughly mark their environment with chemical markers called pheromones, so even small changes like excessive cleaning or new furniture can lead to severe stress.

Cats (like some people you may know) are not good at expressing their emotions and when they are upset the signs that they do show can often come across as destructive, naughty, or inappropriate behavior.  Signs may include:

  • Destruction of furnitureStressed Cat
  • Inappropriate urination or defecation outside the litterbox
  • Aggression towards people or other pets
  • Hiding
  • Poor appetite or even vomiting
  • Poor grooming or an unkempt appearance

As good caretakers and advocates for our pets, we need to be aware that these signs are often a cry for help!

What can be done?

If your cat is exhibiting signs of stress, it is important to first consider a medical problem.  As veterinarians, we can help you to rule out underlying disease that could be resulting in outward symptoms of stress.  Beyond that, a careful look at the environment can often give us some clues.  Things like the cleanliness, location, and type of litter in the litterbox can have a huge impact.  Adding environmental enrichment like toys, scratching posts, and tall cat towers can help keep your cat busy and give them a place to “escape” from the rest of the family for awhile.

If you have more questions or needs advice on helping your kitty with stress, give us a call today!

Meet Caitlin, Our Newest Extern!

Posted on March 14, 2014 by pismobeachvet

We are excited to welcome Mrs. Caitlin Kelly back to our Pismo Beach Vet family. If you have been a client for a while, you will probably remember Caitlin.  She worked with us several years ago as a veterinary assistant while she was in the process of applying to veterinary school!  She is a now a 4th year veterinary student at Oregon State University. As part of her final clinical year of veterinary school, Mrs. Kelly will be spending a week with us in late March. As part of her training, she will be assisting our veterinarians and helping with the clinical management of our patients. We hope that you will welcome her back to the Central Coast!

Caitlin’s Bio:

Caitlin Kelly is a fourth year veterinary student from Oregon State University who will be joining Pismo Beach Veterinary Clinic for a preceptorship in March.  You may remember Caitlin as one of our veterinary technicians… or Winston, her golden retriever, who was often seen hanging out at the clinic.  Caitlin and her husband, Michael, expanded their family with the addition of Claire, a gorgeous blue bicolor Ragdoll cat.  Caitlin passed the national veterinary board exam in December and is set to graduate with her DVM in June of 2014.  In veterinary school, she took an elective course in canine/feline dentistry and in April has an exotic care specialty elective. Her interests in the veterinary field fit perfectly in general practice with particular interests in surgery, dentistry, and exotics.  She enjoys both emergency care and wellness care!  In her spare time, Caitlin enjoys outdoor adventures and photography.  She hopes to move home to the central coast in the summer of 2014 as a small animal and exotics veterinarian.
