Dental Health Month Topic: Feline Tooth Resorptions

Posted on February 7, 2013 by pismobeachvet

Feline tooth resorptions are the most common cause of tooth loss in cats. This condition causes erosions on the surface of the tooth, near the gumline. Affected teeth are very painful and sometimes impossible to identify without anesthesia or xrays. The only treatment available for the tooth is extraction. Although this may sound extreme, it provides immediate pain relief. Affected cats eat and groom much better after the teeth are removed. Because plaque build up promotes tooth resorption lesions, we recommend at least annual dental examinations and routine anesthetized cleanings for all cats.
