Dr. Joel Conn was awarded Volunteer of the Month for the city of San Luis Obispo Parks and Recreation for the month of August 2012. For the past year, Dr. Joel has been happy to act as officiant of the SLO Parks and Rec sponsored Ultimate (frisbee) Pickup League that runs from Fall to Spring.
Along with a few other local players, Dr. Conn founded Central Coast Ultimate in 2010. Through Central Coast Ultimate, he has helped further the sport in this region. The most recent – and third annual – San Luis Obispo Ultimate Summer League had nearly 100 players from Santa Maria to Paso Robles.
Ever since being introduced to Ultimate by his wife during veterinary school at UC Davis, Dr. Joel has had a nearly insatiable appetite for the sport and plays 5-7 days a week! The great thing about Ultimate is that it is inclusive of all skill levels and ages and can be played with almost no equipment or expense: just a disc, some people, and a few cones. Though it is not a very populous area, San Luis Obispo County is becoming a mecca for Ultimate, with organized pickup games occurring everyday (and sometimes twice a day) year round! Dr. Joel is extremely grateful to have access to the beautiful fields of Damon Garcia and to see new players picking up the sport each season.
